WNBA Player Cappie Pondexter here and happy to report that I will be giving you readers a much needed glance into my world, the world of a WNBA player. A look into the life of a woman with great drive, ambition, passion and an incredible love for fashion. Funny huh? Since most people think fashion and women’s basketball shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath. Well join me as I take you on a journey through my new home in NYC with the NY Liberty, my life, travels, fab events, my love and involvement with inner city youth and the intricacies of running an image consulting firm… Just a day in the life of someone who’s more than a BALLER!

A little about me:

After spending an amazing and fulfilling four seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, winning two WNBA championships and a USA Olympic gold medal along the way, devising a plan outside of basketball became imperative as the need to fulfill my dreams outside of the league were also important to my personal development. With this in mind, I requested a trade to New York in March of 2010 and began to nurture my second love, Fashion. Just like music, I eat, sleep and breathe fashion. I love the art of it and all the different feels one piece of clothing can provide. So with this dream in hand, I enlisted the help of long time friend, celebrity stylist and business partner, Lisa Smith-Craig and developed an image consulting firm 4seasonstylemanagement.com that caters to athletes, celebs and everyday people looking to develop their specific style and/or image.

Fast forward to present day and there you have it, 5 years in the league and currently in the big apple living both my personal and professional dreams… With everything else in between. Yes, CP23 in a nutshell… well at least some of it.

Pondexter gets help as Liberty edge Silver Stars

The Liberty played its finest all-around game in some time to recover from Sunday’s loss in Atlanta and avoid losing two in a row for the first time since July 6

There were several heroes. Rookie Kalana Greene led the team with a career-high 17 points off the bench, and fellow reserves Plenette Pierson (16 points, eight rebounds) and Essence Carson (eight points in nine minutes) gave the Liberty a much-needed boost on a night when its starting frontcourt of Janel McCarville, Nicole Powell and Taj McWilliams-Franklin combined for just 13 points.

The Liberty built a 10-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Silver Stars, led by Chamique Holdsclaw and former Liberty star Becky Hammon, went on a run. It would have put the Liberty in a big hole if not for Greene scoring nine of the Liberty’s 18 second-quarter points to salvage a 36-36 tie at halftime.

“That’s what I try to do every time I step on the floor,” Greene said. “I feel like if I’m not being productive the minute I’m in, there’s no use in me playing. Tonight I did a little bit more than I usually do.

“We expect teams to go on runs. It’s how we react [that matters] and we reacted beautiful. We executed on offense and at the end made the stops.”

The Liberty out-hustled the Silver Stars most of the night and scored 21 second-chance points to the visitors’ 13.

“Our players were definitely glad to be back in the Garden,” coach Anne Donovan said. “You can see how much more energy we had.”

Point guard Leilani Mitchell posted 10 points (3-for-5 from 3-point range) and eight assists despite early foul trouble, and held five-time All-Star Hammon to 10 points on 2-for-9 shooting.

“She showed her worth tonight,” Pondexter said of her backcourt mate. “She did an excellent job of frustrating [Hammon]. If you didn’t know by now, Lei is one of the best three-point shooters in the league.”

Cappie Pondexter’s first season with the New York Liberty is off to a bit of a bumpy start, but that’s be expected from a squad that is still trying to develop its team chemistry. As the Liberty heads into the second half of the season, Pondexter hopes the team can buckle down and make a run for the postseason.

Cappie recently sat down with WNBA.com to discuss her time with the Liberty and what it’s going to take to make New York contenders in the second half.

WNBA.com: If you had to give the Liberty a first half grade, what would it be?

Pondexter: We’re probably like a C– …. If that makes sense. We’re average right now. I think we can improve on a lot of things coming into the second half. We can break down things that we did well and we didn’t do well in the first half.

WNBA.com: That leads right to my next question. What’s gone right and what’s gone wrong for the team in the first half? What have you seen so far?

Pondexter: It’s just our team chemistry isn’t quite there yet and giving up games in the fourth quarter is probably the worst thing for us. The positive thing is our defensive intensity has been pretty good. I think teams expect when they play us to get pressure full court and just have 40 minutes of intense defensive pressure.

WNBA.com: Have there been times when it’s clicked and you’ve been able to see the potential of the team?

Pondexter: Definitely; the last two weeks of the season before our two losses, we won three straight and it was just great basketball. The chemistry was there, everybody was having fun, and that’s what we have to get to in the second half.

Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi share Player of the Week honors for the second time this year NBAE/Getty Images

NEW YORK, July 26, 2010 – The New York Liberty’s Cappie Pondexter and Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week presented by Kia Motors, respectively, for games played July 19-25. This is the second weekly honor for each player this season.

This marks the first season that Kia Motors – an official WNBA marketing partner – has presented the WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week award.

Pondexter earned the seventh Player of the Week honor of her career following a week in which she led the league in minutes (37.7 mpg), as New York posted a 2-1 record on the road. The Chicago native also was the league’s fifth leading scorer (22.0 ppg) and tied for fifth in assists (6.0 apg). For the season, Pondexter ranks fourth in the league in scoring (21.2 ppg) and seventh in assists (5.0 apg).

Pondexter opened the week by scoring six of her game-high 24 points in overtime as the Liberty beat the host Connecticut Sun 82-74. She also added six rebounds and logged the first of three consecutive games with six assists. Pondexter next scored 16 points in a win at Chicago and capped the week with a team-high 26-point effort at Atlanta.

She has gained every accolade a professional basketball player could hope for: She was the Big East Conference Women’s Player of the Year at Rutgers, the most valuable player and she made the WNBA All-Star team. She was also the first player in WNBA history to win three consecutive Western Conference Player of the Week awards and has won two championships.

Ever ambitious, Pondexter looks to reach even higher heights with the New York Liberty by bringing New York the championship. Here, she talks basketball, her friendship with LeBron James, fashion and makeup with Aol. Black Voices:
BV: How did you first get started playing basketball? Who taught you to play?

CP: My brother is a basketball player, and he would take me to the park ’cause he had to babysit me, and I’ve just continued from there. I’ve been playing since I was 10, and it’s just something I love to do. My brother is nine years older than me. We never played one-on-one, but I could beat him now [laughs].

BV: What made you choose Rutgers and Vivien Stringer over basketball powerhouses like UConn and Tennessee?

CP: They were in my top five schools when I did my recruiting visits. My last recruiting visit I was supposed to go to UConn, but I canceled it, and I committed to Rutgers. Rutgers was the first school I visited, and I just felt comfortable. Coach Stringer, she’s an awesome lady, very powerful. I felt that from the moment I met her. I’m thankful I went there. We talk weekly. She’s a mother so she understands.

Catching Up With … Cappie Pondexter

New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter is ready to do her own thing.

After spending her first four seasons with the Phoenix Mercury and winning two WNBA championships along the way, Pondexter was traded to New York in the offseason in hopes of starting the next chapter of her career.

Pondexter, who leads the Liberty in scoring (19.7) and assists (4.9), is more than just a basketball player. Off the court, she runs an image consulting firm and knows her designers like she knows her competition.

I had the chance to sit down with Pondexter in Los Angeles this week prior to the Liberty’s 80-68 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.

MV: Growing up in Chicago, what are your thoughts about LeBron James possibly going to the Bulls?

CP: Honestly, I think it would be great for the city of Chicago. To have a player like Michael Jordan leave a great legacy and to have someone like LeBron to follow him is awesome. Him and D.Rose together, Joakim Noah … it would be great.

MV: What’s the adjustment been like from Phoenix to New York?

CP: It’s been a transition. I have played with Phoenix since I got drafted so my heart is kind of there. I played with one of the best guards in the country and to leave her was definitely hard but I had to move on. It was time for me to have a career change. Other than that, it’s been great besides not being over .500. I think we are starting to come along.

MV: Why did you want to go to New York?

CP: Honestly, I won two championships and I started a business 1.5 years ago that’s based out of New York. It’s an image consulting business and New York was looking for a franchise player and I thought it was the perfect fit for me.
